Noct immediately sits back up as the egg is set beside him, reaching out to carefully touch it before he's looking at Ash with a warm smile.
"Ash, you didn't have to--thank you! Seriously!" This was the first time he'd been gifted a Pokemon like this. Some Pokemon was about to become a very doted on little thing. "How close is it to hatching??"
"I can hear it sometimes but there's no like cracks on it yet, so it's not gonna be bursting out in an hour. I think the seller said a couple of days? So you're gonna have to wait and see what it is!" Ash beamed, sitting on the edge of the bed with him.
"Your only clue is that you can call em either Excalibur or Caliburn!"
Pulling the egg into his lap, Noct watches it fondly as he rests a hand flat on it again to see if he can feel anything.
"I can't wait," he said happily, swaying slightly to bump his shoulder against Ash's when the other sat beside him. "Excalibur or Caliburn, huh?" Yeah he has no idea what either of those mean. "I kind of like the sound of Excalibur."
"Excalibur it is. I'll explain once it hatches where the name's from!" Maybe it'll hatch the same day as his Vulpix egg. He looked over at his bag and tapped his knee, thinking. Remembering the other egg he had, he talked a little quieter.
"I got one for Ignis too. It's a different Pokemon, but the breeder told me they're known to predict disasters and stuff, so...I don't know, it sounded like the kind of Pokemon he'd appreciate having around. And...I don't know. it...kinda feels like he doesn't, like me? Or that, he doesn't know what to think of me yet?"
"I'll hold you to that." Because he's extremely curious now.
His expression softens into something more thoughtful as Ash tells him about the other egg, Noct having to resist the urge to frown at the comments about Ignis not liking Ash. His steward--his friend--did seem to have some initial dislike for him and they had even talked about it a bit at the Arcade in Goldenrod.
"That's just Ignis. I promise. He's always a little standoff-ish around people he's never met before. He use to be like that with Prompto."
And being ten years older than them probably wasn't helping anything...
Ash relaxed a little, ruffling his hair. "You mean that? Cos I mean, if I've done something I wanna know so I can like, apologise and not do it again. The egg isn't meant to be like that, it's just. I figured it'd help smooth things over a bit if it's just because he doesn't know what to make of me or something like that."
The age difference, their worlds, who they were back home...it was easy to forget all that with Noctis. But with Ignis? It just seemed so much more prevalent and awkward. If they had no friends between them, he'd just leave him to do his thing. But given they did have a mutual friend, he wanted it to work out.
"Yeah, I mean it. He'll warm up to you, just give him some time." Probably a lot of time but Noctis was hopeful that things would smooth out between the two.
His gaze falls to the egg in his lap again and he smooths a hand over it gently.
"I don't see how anyone could dislike you, Ash. You're one of the nicest people I've ever met," Noct admitted, smiling faintly. "So don't worry. It'll be alright."
Ash ducked his head, ruffling his hair. "Heh, nah, I mean- I try to be good but I know not everyone's gonna like me. That's just, how it goes. But I'd like for him and me to get along!"
He smiled when he sees Noctis pet his egg. "And I really hope you and that Pokemon get along too."
Noctis's smile grows and he leans his shoulder against Ash's.
"I hope we do too. My biggest fear is getting a Pokemon egg and having it hatch only to find out it hates me or something," he admitted through a soft laugh. "Hasn't happened yet though."
Ash grinned and leaned back slightly, resting his weight on his arm so he could lean into Noctis too.
"Hey, who could hate that face of yours? Now I don't have much experience with being hatched from an egg, but I reckon there's worse things to hatch and see first thing in my life. ...There's better things too just hatching and seeing a huge-ass cooked breakfast just waiting for ya but it's not the worst thing!"
"Oh gee thanks. I'm glad I'm at least close to being better than a huge breakfast," Noctis drawled as the egg on his lap gave another shake. "Guess I just have to work harder so I can surpass breakfast's ranking and become the best."
"I mean. If I came to and you were giving me a cooked breakfast, that'd be hard to beat." He gave Noctis a dazzling smile and put his hand on his heart. "Why, I'd swear my loyalty and my life to the person who awoke me, blurry eyed and weak, into this world, and who then greeted me with a hearty meal and a kind smile! To them I would sing my praises! If they wanted me to I mean, some people might get a bit awkward about me following them around and bursting into song like "Make way, for this great man! Hey hey, it's this cool guy!""
Dissolving into laughter, Noctis shook his head and gave Ash a gentle shove, making sure to be careful so he didn't jar the egg in his lap too much.
"You're an idiot!" he said playfully, a fond look on his face as he let out a sigh through his laughter. "You'd be the first singing member of the Kingsglaive or something like that. I'd pay to see the looks on some of the higher ranking members faces."
Ash laughed as he's shoved, fluidly shifting back as he was.
"Well, I beat the higher members didn't get a cooked breakfast from you did they? It's not like we'll be in the middle of a fight and I'll bust out my guitar and like, start singing about how we're going to wreck their lives. Or try to make things weird by looking our enemies in the eye and singing 'When I Think About You, I Touch Myself'. That's a real song back home, I swear to God, I didn't make that up!"
"I'm not allowed to cook most of the time so no one has ever had to eat breakfast made by me," Noct admitted, blushing a bit as he laughed again. "Bullshit. There's no way that's a real song!"
Ash gave him a look and sat up, retrieving his guitar. He strummed it, checking it was in the right sort of key for this song. And then he sat on the bed, folded his legs under him and began to play. Haze Conflict, completely unaware of what his trainer was about to perform, curled up beside his leg and enjoyed the melody. And he began to sing. When he think the chorus...of course he'd look to Noctis and sing it with nothing but confidence, even waggling his eyebrows at him.
Fortunately for Noctis, he had to ad-lib in the middle of the second verse. "You're the one who makes me come runnin' You're the sun who makes me shine When you're around, I can't remember The rest of the lyrics-"
Leave it to Ash to actually bust out his guitar and sing this apparently real song. Noctis starts laughing as soon as his friend starts, both arms curling around the egg as he tries to contain himself.
"See you're totally making it up!" he managed to get out, shaking his head out of amusement as he looked over at Ash. "That's terrible, you know that right? You have some really weird music in your world, Ash."
"It's totally real I swear!" He held up his hands defensively, laughing as well. He ended up bending over the guitar with his laughter. "I just can't remember it entirely! I haven't heard it in a while. But yeah, I mean. We got so many types of music I could never play it all to ya. But there's tons of hilarious songs like that. Clearly that one should be my debut single here in Johto."
But he was still snickering. He's not really gonna do that.
"Yeah, clearly. You'd be a hit!" Noctis teased. Though, honestly, a song like that would probably go over pretty well. Hilarious stuff like that usually does. "You just might want to be careful considering how many little kids run around this place like they don't have a care in the world. The last thing anyone needs is them singing your terribly wonderful songs."
"I got songs that are suitable for kids! Heh, I mean. There's a bunch Dad used to sing to me when I couldn't sleep. And he taught me a couple of songs in Irish actually. I taught those to my Pokemon too."
None of them were singing anything daft...yet. Some where definitely gonna end up picking up on those songs too in time. He lowered his gaze to the guitarstroking along the strings. "Some of them are a bit daft, like a nonsense song about seaweed. But others are a bit more...well they've got actual meaning to 'em. But nobody here knows Irish except for me I think."
"Irish huh? I'd like to hear some of those sometime." He'd heard a couple different languages since he got here and it was kind of fascinating, in a way. You didn't really run into a lot of that where he's from. There were people with varying accents but different languages?
Well, the Astrals had their thing but that was the Astrals.
"You'd like to hear some of those songs or just the language?" For him the idea of not having a ton of foreign languages was just as strange. How could that happen? The world was so vast and history being what it was, it seemed inevitable that people would end up using different words for things.
And being raised by a man from rural Ireland, his dad had been determined to use it. Hell it was Oisin's first language - English was his second one.
"Both?" Noctis admitted before laughing. "We don't really have a lot of different languages back home so coming here and learning that it was a thing in so many worlds..it's really cool."
And hey, just because he hadn't paid a whole lot of attention in school most of the time didn't mean learning wasn't something he enjoyed.
"The only real difference is some people have accents depending on where they live but everyone still speaks the same language," he mused, curious about whether or not there had been different languages at one point. It's not something that had ever come up in his studies.
Noctis wasn't sure he was going to be able to pronounce what Ash had said at all but he can't help but squint at his friend with a faint grin.
